Outpatient medical services are procedures or tests that can be done in a healthcare center without staying overnight. Part B is the part of Medicare that provides Medicare beneficiaries access to a variety of outpatient medical services.
Let’s take a look at the outpatient medical services Medicare covers.
Ground ambulance services are provided by Medicare for beneficiaries who need to go to a hospital or Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) for medically necessary services when other forms of transportation could jeopardize their wellbeing. In addition, Medicare may cover ambulance transportation in a helicopter or airplane to a hospital if emergency transit that ground transportation can’t offer is required. Note that Medicare will only pay for services to the nearest hospital or SNF that can provide the care you need.
This is the care you receive to prevent illness, discover potential health conditions, and keep yourself healthy. Medicare provides coverage for many preventive care services such as counseling, vaccines, and screenings.
Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
If your physician determines that you need certain equipment at home such as a wheelchair, oxygen equipment, supplies, walkers, or hospital beds, Medicare will provide coverage. Also, you must get your supplies or equipment from suppliers approved by Medicare.
Mental Health Care (outpatient)
Medicare also provides coverage for substance abuse services and lab tests, though you must meet the eligibility requirement. What you are required to pay will depend on whether you are being examined and diagnosed with a mental health condition and you are currently receiving treatment.
Medicare provides coverage for a lot of screenings that can prevent common health conditions or serious illnesses. Some examples of the screenings Medicare covers include:
- Bone mass measurement
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Colorectal cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Prostate cancer
Medicare also covers CT scans, EKGs, X-rays, and other diagnostics.
Outpatient Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy
Medicare covers some of the cost of outpatient speech and physical therapy if it is recommended and constantly reviewed by a physician and offered by a Medicare-approved therapist or facility. However, there are limits on the amount Medicare will pay for these services, and the amount will be partially determined by who offers the service.
