new to Medicare? Here's what you should know

New to Medicare in 2022? Top 3 Things You Should Know!

As a new Medicare policyholder, you’ll have opportunities unlike ever before. You’ll have a plan that works for you, and an affordable one that is lifesaving without having to dip into your life savings. With this knowledge, you’ll be ahead of the game when it comes to Medicare.

1) You’ll Get A Free Wellness Visit

When you first enroll in Medicare Part B, you’ll be granted a free Welcome to Medicare Visit that you can take advantage of within the first 12 months.

It involves getting preventive screenings, which can help you diagnose conditions early. You’ll be able to get referrals to see specialists, and you’ll also get free immunizations (the flu shot, for example).

You’ll also be assessed for your height, weight, depression risk, family medical history, and any prescription medications or supplements you take so that the healthcare workers will be able to provide further guidance.

2) You Can Take Your Coverage The Extra Mile

Joining Medicare Part A and Part B (known as Original Medicare) opens the door for other opportunities to make your healthcare costs lower.

Original Medicare works well with other insurance policies. If you have employer insurance, your Medicare plan will help extend your savings when you have both policies.

You may also join Medicare Advantage later on. If you decide to do this, you will have all the coverage Original Medicare offers, plus other benefits such as dental and vision. It’s important to note that you cannot have employer coverage or Medigap if you choose to get Medicare Advantage.

Being new to Medicare also provides you with a potentially once in a lifetime chance to join Medigap. Medigap serves to pick up where your Original Medicare coverage left off, allowing you to cut out-of-pocket costs to $0 in many cases. It’s best to get this within six months of joining Medicare. After this, you may not be able to get this plan.

3) Medicare Allows You To Switch

You’re never stuck with a Medicare policy. New policies emerge every year, and oftentimes certain plans will adopt new coverage features that will make them more appealing than the plan you have.

If you decide to experiment with other coverage options, you can do so during the Annual Enrollment Period, which takes place from October 15 to December 7. You have the freedom to make modifications such as switching from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (and vice versa) and joining Medicare Part D to add drug coverage.
