Do I Have the Right Plan Going Into 2022?

Medicare is not always the same from one year to the next. Costs and coverage change, providers move in and out of network, and new policies emerge. With these changes come different enrollment periods you can make use of if you feel the need to switch to a new plan.

What Should I Consider Before Making Changes?

It’s important to look at the upcoming changes to your plan that will take effect in 2022. All changes will be laid out before you in the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which arrives in September of each year.

The Evidence of Coverage (EOC) and Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) documents are also important to look over, as they show how your Medicare coverage applied to the treatments you got.

If you’re content with the coverage you have, as noted in the EOC and MSN documents, and you are fine with the costs and coverage changes listed in the ANOC, you do not have to take any action at all.

If you need to make changes for your 2022 coverage, you can do so during the upcoming Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period.

What Is The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you’d like to switch out of, you can do so from January 1 to March 31 of 2022 during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period.

Here, you’ll be able to:

  • Switch from your current Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Drop Medicare Advantage and join Original Medicare and Medicare Part D

What If I Don’t Have Medicare Yet?

What you can do to apply for Medicare for the first time depends on when you turn 65. If you are in between the three months before you turned 65 and the three months following your 65th birthday (a time known as the Initial Enrollment Period), you can join any Medicare policy you want. You have the freedom to choose between Medicare Part A, Part B, Part C (Medicare Advantage), and/or Part D. You’ll be able to make a careful evaluation as to which plan to join that will be effective for 2022.

If you don’t have Medicare and you’re outside the Initial Enrollment Period, your only option is to join Medicare Part A and/or Part B (together known as Original Medicare) from January 1 to March 31. For Medicare Advantage and/or Part D in 2022, you’ll have to join between April 1 and June 30. This coverage will be effective on July 1.
